Pulleys and Gears: Wonderful Machines
With gear trains and model cranes, students explore the ingenuity of the simple machines that make our lives easier.
In this program, students
- discover why pulleys, gears, the wheel, and the axle are such clever inventions, and how they reduce the force required to do work
- build gear trains using hands-on activity boards
- create a block and tackle using model cranes to lift a heavy weight with minimal effort
- examine various applications of these devices as they discover pulleys and gears in everyday objects
